Where a price comes from
Take a football match where a bookmaker offers 1.80 / 3.70 / 4.60 on home, draw and away, and 1.85 / 1.95 on over/under 2.5 goals.
Remove the margin. Those odds add up to more than 100% — that excess is the bookmaker's margin. Taken out, the fair chances are about home 52%, draw 25%, away 23%.
Find the goal rates. The book searches for the expected goals for each side that reproduce exactly those chances and the 2.5 line: here about 1.75 for the home side and 0.95 for the away side.
Build the score table. From those two numbers comes the chance of every final score:
Home \ Away 0 1 2 3 0 6.7% 6.4% 3.0% 1.0% 1 11.8% 11.2% 5.3% 1.7% 2 10.3% 9.8% 4.6% 1.5% 3 6.0% 5.7% 2.7% 0.9% Price every market from the table. Each market is a sum of squares: home win is everything below the diagonal (56%), over 2.5 every score with three goals or more (51%), both teams to score every square outside the first row and column (51%), correct score 2-1 the single square (9.8%).
Add the house margin from the Margins tab, and round.
In play, the table is rebuilt from the current score for the time that is left. At 1-0 after 60 minutes, only a third of the match's goals are still to come, so the table starts from 1-0 and spreads only those.
Each sport has its own model: goals in football and ice hockey, points around a normal curve in basketball and handball, serve-by-serve in tennis and padel, set by set in volleyball and table tennis. Corners and cards are priced on their own, from the bookmaker's corners and cards lines.
Asian quarter lines
A quarter line is two bets in one: half the stake on each neighbouring line. A bet on the home side at −0.75 is half on −0.5 and half on −1.
| Home side wins by | −0.5 half | −1 half | Result |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2 or more | Won | Won | Won |
| 1 | Won | Returned | Half won |
| Draw or loss | Lost | Lost | Lost |
Its fair price is the one at which both halves together break even, so a quarter line is priced as fairly as a half line.
The bet builder
A bet builder joins selections on the same match — for example home win and over 2.5 goals. These are not independent: if the home side wins, goals are more likely. Multiplying the two prices, as a combo would, gets it wrong.
| Chance | Fair odds | |
|---|---|---|
| Home win | 56.2% | 1.78 |
| Over 2.5 | 50.6% | 1.98 |
| Multiplied, as a combo would | 28.5% | 3.51 |
| From the score table (home wins and 3+ goals) | 34.2% | 2.93 |
The book prices a builder from the score table directly, before the start and in play (where the table follows the market's live price). It is offered on:
- Football, on markets settled by the full-time score: the result, double chance, both teams to score, total and team goals, half-goal handicaps, correct score, clean sheet, win to nil and odd or even goals.
- Basketball, on the final score with overtime: the money line, handicaps, total points, each team's points and odd or even.
- Ice hockey, on regulation time: the result, double chance, both teams to score, total and team goals, handicaps and odd or even. Its money line, which overtime and a shootout decide, is not offered in a builder.
- Tennis: the winner, set betting, total games and game handicaps, the first set, and odd or even games.
Markets on halves, corners or cards, and any selection that can be half won or void on some score (draw no bet, quarter-goal lines), are refused at the bet slip, as are combinations from different matches, which are combos.
Cash out
A player can close an open bet early. Its value is the stake times the price taken, divided by the price now, less a 5% margin.
100 on a selection at 2.00 whose price is now 1.25: worth 100 × 2.00 ÷ 1.25 = 160, offered at about 152.
Cash out is not offered on a bet with a lost leg, a suspended selection, or a bet builder.
Odds boosts
A trader can offer one selection above its market price, with a stake cap and an end time — see Running the book. A boosted bet is a single only, and settles and counts toward liability at the boosted price.
